The Spanish Quarter, a symbol of Naples' folkloristic tradition, is a must-see for first-time visitors and those who want to relive the colors and flavors of the ancient city!
With its new guided tour, Insolitaguida Napoli takes you on a discovery of one of Naples' most characteristic areas, where you'll discover unique places and contrasting artistic expressions, such as votive shrines, symbols of popular devotion, and artistic murals, symbols of social redemption.
During (or at the end) of the tour, a coffee tasting with the 3 C's is planned and a nice "food" stop so you can taste the Italian-style fried cuoppo accompanied by a glass of red wine!
Every great city has a neighborhood that defines its soul — Bagheria for Palermo, the Navigli for Milan, Trastevere for Rome, the Bronx for New York — and Naples has its own simply known as “i Quartieri,” short for the Spanish Quarters.
This historic area of the city is made up of three distinct districts — San Ferdinando, Avvocata, and Montecalvario — which date back to the 16th century, when they were built to house Spanish troops. Remarkably untouched by the city’s later transformations, the Spanish Quarters have preserved a dense core of historical and artistic heritage. Wandering through these narrow streets, one can still feel the true Neapolitan spirit: a vibrant blend of tradition, history, and everyday life, suspended between the sacred and the profane.
For those looking to experience the Spanish Quarters from every angle, the cultural association Insolitaguida offers a guided storytelling walk aptly titled “Spanish Quarters: Between Colors and Flavors.”
This approximately two-hour route winds through one of Naples’ most evocative areas, revealing unique places and striking contrasts — from edicole votive, small shrines symbolizing popular devotion, to bold contemporary murals that speak of social redemption and rebirth.
Framing the experience are the distinctive street lamps designed by renowned architect and designer Riccardo Dalisi, which transform the Spanish Quarters into a true open-air museum.
Along the way, the tour is enriched with anecdotes and curiosities about local life, including the neighborhood’s passionate football fandom and the culture of the vascio, the traditional ground-floor Neapolitan home — offering an authentic glimpse into the heart of Naples.
