Certosa of San Martino

An isolated place far from the lively city life of medieval Naples was chosen by a group of men called Carthusians to lead a life of prayer and silent work: a radical choice but which ended up intertwined with the events of the troubled political life of Naples among the Angevins , the Aragonese and the heavy Spanish viceregal domination. From this historical period, the Certosa carries with it the indelible signs of some of the cultural and artistic seasons in which Naples was the absolute protagonist.

With us you have the opportunity to admire the two most important seasons of Neapolitan Baroque with the magnificent frescoes of the Cavalier d'Arpino, the marble inlays of Cosimo Fanzago, the canvases of Belisario Corenzio and Jusepe de Ribera. But the Certosa di San Martino, widely considered a treasure chest of the Baroque, contains within it some of the most important collections of seventeenth-century and nineteenth-century Italian art as well as two magnificently preserved carriages and one of the most beautiful Neapolitan nativity scenes, the Cuciniello nativity scene.
